In 2004 he won the championship of Russia among armed forces and thus he made Master of Sports standard. In 2005 he became the winner of the Bronze Medal at All-Russian Winter Championship “Olympiiskie nadezdy”. During several years he lived in Tyumen where he studied at Tyumen State Oil and Gas University and represented Russian sport union of students. In 2006 he won in the Russian Championship among students, became the Champion of Ural Federal District and “Olympiiskie nadezdy” and was the Silver Medalist at World Student Championship in Alma-Ata. A year later he again became the Champion of Russia among students at welterweight. In total he conducted 311 bouts in amateur boxing, besides 264 of them were ended with his victory.
In summer 2009 Mikhaylenko signed the contract with the promoter Alexey Titov and debuted on the professional ring – in his first bout he defeated by points his rival Ivan Kaberkon from Volgograd. During next several years he conducted many successful fights, in all of them he was a winner. Then in April 2012 he got the opportunity to fight for the vacant WBO Europe welterweight title. The bout against Sherzodbek Alimjanov from Uzbekistan lasted all 12 rounds and the
victory was given to Mikhaylenko by unanimous decision of judges. However, he couldn’t manage to defend his title because of arm injury - it took more than a year for rehabilitation.
In 2014 after several victories in Russia Dmitry Mikhaylenko debuted on the ring in the USA at the boxing evenings of Main Events company he won by points Sechew Powell and Ronald Cruz ahead-of-time.
In 2015 he conducted successful bouts in Canada and the USA.
Dmitry Mikhaylenko suffered his first defeat on May,6 2016 in Yekaterinburg and lost to Charles Manyuchi from Zimbabwe for the WBC Silver Welterweight title by unanimous decision of judges.
On Novermber,18 2016 there took place the main bout of the evening for the interim WBC Silver World Welterweight title (up to 66,7 kg). Dmitry Mikhaylenko fought with Breidis Prescott from Colombia and won in the 7th round by a technical knock-out. In the first round Prescott knocked down Mikhaylenko by punch from the left, though Dmitry managed to rehabilitate very quickly and not just continued the bout, but turned up the wick. With every round the advantage of Mikhaylenko only increased, he constantly went further and made a lot of punches. In the 7th round Mikhaylenko made long left punch knocking down Prescott. The latter stood up before the referee ended to count but refused to continue the bout.
